It’s been over a year since we first broke the news that that women’s health clinics in New York routinely go uninspected, and it looks like the state is finally cracking down…on nail salons?!
A recent expose’ from the New York Times has prompted an order from Governor Andrew Cuomo demanding the immediate inspection of all New York nail salons. Any clinic found unlicensed or in violation of the health code will be shut down right away.
In a statement, Governor Cuomo said, “We will not stand idly by as workers are deprived of their hard-earned wages and robbed of their most basic rights.”
We applaud the Governor for his attention to these purported abuses of basic rights. But don’t women also have a right to be confident that New York’s abortion clinics are clean and safe?
The striking disparity between how New York treats nail salons and how it treats women’s clinics, where tens of thousands of surgical abortions are performed every year, illustrates the extent to which ideological stridency has overtaken common sense in New York State. Shouldn’t Governor Cuomo have at least as much concern for women entering abortion clinics as he has for women working in nail salons?
Documents we received from the Department of Health in 2013 revealed disgusting violations in abortion clinics, including the reuse of disposable medical equipment, relying on broken monitors to assess patient conditions, and failure to ensure adequate infection control.
While there are over 17,000 nail salons in New York and only 225 abortion clinics in the state, the private surgeries taking place there deserve at least the same care and attention to sanitary practices. The women of New York deserve better, both in the salon chair and on the doctor’s table.
