The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene releases its Summary of Vital Statistics every year. Included in this report are data about the number of pregnancies, live births, spontaneous terminations (miscarriages), and induced terminations (abortions) in NYC. The data are broken down by borough, age, race, and ethnicity.
In 2009, there were 87,273 abortions in New York City. There were 225,667 pregnancies and 126,774 live births. When you subtract the number of miscarriages from the total number of pregnancies, 41% of viable pregnancies ended in abortion in 2009. Click on the links below for data on each of the five boroughs.
